An Act of Spiritual Communion: Danielle Rose

In her younger years, Danielle Rose graced St. John’s with her presence occasionally leading music as a gift to all of us. She is now a wife & mother of three, and she is still making music. We thank her for the gift of this music video. We are sharing this video with her permermission.

“An Act of Spiritual Communion” by Danielle Rose OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEOSt. Thomas Aquinas defined Spiritual Communion as “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Holy Sacrament and a loving embrace as though we had already received Him.”

Inspired by the many prayers of the same name, I wrote this song to express the painful surrender of not being able to attend daily Mass (after 16 years of uncompromised commitment to receive Jesus daily in the Eucharist.) There came a point in my vocation of motherhood where I knew Jesus was asking me to stay home and feed my babies and let them nap in order to manifest my love for Christ. I wanted to go to Mass. But Jesus wanted me to receive Him in spiritual communion as I fed the hungry child and sheltered them with rest in His Name. Since that time I’ve sought to adore Jesus in every tabernacle and unite myself to His Body in my longing as I seek to fulfill his will daily in my life as wife and mother.

During this time when our human family suffers from the silent battle of isolation, and now the deafening cry of division, I pray that this musical meditation will be a source of hope and healing as we prepare to celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi. Let us humbly and gratefully receive His love, and allow ourselves to be undeniably transformed, revealing the image of God in which we were fearfully and wonderfully made.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

I said I’d rather die than go a day
Without receiving your Body and Blood
All of Heaven’s grace sublime therein contained
Our Daily Bread come down from Heaven to sustain
His promise to remain

Since I cannot come to receive you now
I’ll reach with arms of faith across this town
What I wouldn’t give to touch you
My lover lies in wait for me
To give His Body in Holy Communion
To become one with me
The Divine ecstasy

Love can sail oceans
Climb mountains
Cross deserts
Fly through the stars of night
So we may unite
I embrace you as though you were already there
My longing is my prayer
My heart is a vigil lantern aflame in the dark
The desire of my heart

Since I cannot come to receive you now
I’ll reach with arms of faith across this town
What I wouldn’t give to touch you
My lover lies in wait for me
To give His Body in Holy Communion
To become one with me
The Divine ecstasy

May your heart, O Jesus
In the most Blessed Sacrament
Thou art present
Be praised, adored, and loved
With grateful affection
At every moment
In all the tabernacles of the world
Even to the end of time, Amen

Since I cannot come to receive you now
I’ll reach with arms of faith across this town
What I wouldn’t give to touch you
My lover lies in wait for me
To give His Body in Holy Communion
To become one with me
The Divine ecstasy

Since I cannot come to receive you now
I’ll reach with arms of faith across this town
What I wouldn’t give to touch you
My lover lies in wait for me
